It mainly occurs in kittens less than 1 year old, and the clinical manifestations are sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, high dehydration and marked decrease in the number of white blood cells. It is the most common infectious disease in domestic cats.

The disease mainly affects cats, but other felines (wild cats, tigers, leopards) can also be infected. Kittens have special susceptibility. Sick animals are the main source of infection of the disease. The virus is excreted with vomit, saliva, feces and urine, contaminating food, tableware, cathouses and the surrounding environment, making susceptible cats infected and sick after contact. Digestive and respiratory tract. A few weeks or more than a year after recovery, the sick cat can also detoxify from the feces and urine to the outside world. During the acute phase of the disease, fleas and some blood-sucking insects can also transmit the disease. After the pregnant cat is infected, it can also be transmitted vertically to the fetus through the fetus. The disease is more common in late autumn to winter and spring. The incidence rate from December to March of the following year accounts for more than 55.8%, of which the incidence rate in March is 19.5%, and the duration of the disease is mostly 3-6 days. If you can endure it for 7 days, you can recover. The case fatality rate is generally 60-70%, and the high one can reach more than 90%.

1. Symptoms

The incubation period of the disease is generally 2-6 days. In susceptible cats, the infection rate is as high as 100%, but not all infected cats develop symptoms. According to the clinical manifestations, it can be divided into the following three clinical types:

(1) The most acute type: the sick cat has no time to show symptoms, Sudden death is often misdiagnosed as poisoning.

(2) Acute type: the sick cat only shows prodromal symptoms such as mental sluggishness and loss of appetite, and will soon die within 24 hours .

(3) Subacute type: At the beginning of the disease, the sick cat is mentally sluggish, has anorexia, and the body temperature is as high as 40°C or more, 24 After 2-3 days, the temperature drops to normal temperature, and the body temperature rises to above 40°C again, showing obvious biphasic heat. During the second fever, the symptoms intensified, and the sick cat was highly depressed and weak, lying prone with its head resting on its forelimbs. Vomiting and diarrhea occur. Drained bloody watery stools and quickly dehydrated. When the sick cat has high temperature, the white blood cell count can be reduced to below 2000/mm (normal cat is 15000-20000/mm3).

2. Treatment methods

Currently, there is no specific drug for this disease, and there is no effective treatment. Generally take the following comprehensive measures.

(1) Specific therapy: Usually, a large dose of anti-disease serum is injected at the beginning of the disease, and a certain curative effect can be obtained.

(2) Antibacterial therapy: injection of broad-spectrum antibiotics such as gentamicin and kanamycin to control mixed infections or follow-up Infection. Such as intramuscular injection of gentamicin 20 mg or kanamycin 200 mg, 2 times a day, for 4-5 days.

(3) Symptomatic treatment: dehydration: intravenous injection with vitamin B, C5% glucose saline 50-100 ml, divided into 2 injections. Non-stop vomiting: intramuscularly inject 0.5 ml of Amal and vitamin B per kilogram of the cat's body weight, divided into 2 injections a day.

3. Precautions

(1) The sanitation of the cat house and its surrounding environment should be done at ordinary times. Newly raised cats must be vaccinated. Only when there is no abnormality in isolation and observation for 6 days, can they be kept in mixed groups.

(2) Scientific immunization: First, attenuated vaccine, 45-60-day-old weaned kittens first immunization, April-May The second-year-old is immune, and then the immunization is once a year. Adult cats are immunized once a year. Followed by inactivated vaccine, the first vaccination is given before and after weaning (6-8 weeks old), the second vaccination is 9-12 weeks old, and 2 injections are given every 3-4 weeks every year after that.

(3) Dead cats and sick cats in the middle and late stages should be buried or burned after culling. Thoroughly disinfect contaminated materials, water, utensils and environment with 1% formalin solution to cut off the transmission route and control the development of the epidemic.

Note: The number of dogs and cats raised in my country has increased in the past ten years, but most breeders, even some pet doctors, Little is known about how to vaccinate dogs and cats scientifically.
