The green-headed starling (scientific name: Aplonis fusca, English name: Tasman Starling) is a bird belonging to the family Starling.

[naming]

The green-headed starling (Aplonis fusca) is a Norfolk Island starling.

John Gould described and named the starlings on Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island as Aplonis fuscus in 1836. Later, in 1928, Australian ornithologist Gregory Macalister Mathews discovered that the starlings on Lord Howe Island were more brown and grey, so he called them Lord Howe starlings (Aplonis fusca hulliana), and on Norfolk Island they were called green The head starling (Aplonis fusca fusca). Both starlings are extinct.

【Characteristics】

The green-headed starling is about 20 cm long, with a wing length of 9.8-10.3 cm, a tail length of 6.3-6.8 cm, a beak peak of 1.3 cm, and feet long 2.5 cm. They are generally gray-brown. The male has a glossy metallic green color from the head to the throat. The back, rump, upper tail feathers, underarms and underparts are all grey, but the lower tail feathers are white. The beak is black and the eyes are orange-red. The female is similar in color, but with a darker green part, with light brown feathers on the sides of the gray neck. The lower breast is ochre, and the abdomen and lower tail feathers are yellow-white.

【Extinction】

The reason for the extinction of the green-headed starling is unknown. Invasive European birds compete with them for food, as are excessive hunting and habitat loss. They became extinct in 1923.
