A few days ago, Shenzhen Huanggang Customs seized a case of illegally bringing live turtles into the country, and seized more than 80 pet tortoises with a total weight of 34 kilograms.

At around 21:00 on February 21st, Huanggang Customs officers found a mainland passenger carrying a large black backpack and two heavy cloth bags in his hands from the Futian Port travel inspection Entry in the hall.

When the customs officer saw that he was walking in a hurry and the items he brought were very heavy and suspicious, he signaled him to go to the customs inspection area for inspection. When opening the three pieces of luggage carried by the passenger, the customs officer found that all the luggage were live turtles.

The largest of these live turtles is more than 30 centimeters long, close to the size of a small laptop, and the smallest is 10 centimeters long, about the size of a palm. The tortoise shell is black or brown, with golden squares or oval patches on it, which are very striking.

After inquiries, the passengers said that these tortoises were all sea turtles and were brought into the sea for release. However, after preliminary identification by the inspection and quarantine department, these live turtles are all terrestrial turtles, not sea turtles. Customs officers suspect the live animals may have been brought in to be sold as ornamental animals or pets.

At present, the case has been transferred to the inspection and quarantine department for further investigation.

Huanggang Customs reminds passengers that according to relevant regulations, passengers are limited to one companion dog and cat per person, and they must pass the quarantine before they are released. Other live animals are not allowed to be brought into the country at will.
