As we all know, dogs are different from humans. Dogs have no sweat glands on their skin. They can only rely on rapid breathing to expel most of the heat from the mouth, and a small part of the heat is excreted from the foot pads and a small amount of sweat. Therefore, under the action of high temperature, high humidity and strong sunlight, the body's metabolism is vigorous, the heat production is more, the heat dissipation is less, and the heat is accumulated in the body, which will cause meningeal congestion and central nervous system dysfunction.
Dogs are prone to heat stroke when:
1. Activities in strong sunlight, such as walking, training, playing.
2. The dog may suffer from heat stroke due to excessive temperature, poor ventilation and lack of drinking water if the dog is kept in a closed room, in a dog cage or in a car for too long.
3. Dogs that are obese, have heart disease, thick coats and lack exercise are also prone to heat stroke.
Performance of heat stroke:
Body temperature rises sharply, reaching 40.5℃, shortness of breath develops to difficulty breathing, high degree of hypoxia throughout the body, conjunctiva, oral cavity The mucous membranes and tongue are brick red, then dark purple. Due to the increase of cerebrospinal fluid and the increase of cerebral pressure due to meningeal hyperemia and brain injury, the dog has generalized spasm, proptosis, unsteady walking, sudden fall to the ground, convulsions of the whole body, limbs in swimming posture, and foaming in the mouth. Treatment can lead to death due to pulmonary edema and heart failure.
Rescue measures:
If your dog has the above symptoms, you should immediately put it in a cool and ventilated place, under the dog's head, thighs , Put ice cubes in the inner thighs (no ice cubes can be placed in ice lollies), or rinse the whole body with cold water to cool down, and immediately send them to the animal hospital.
Precautions:
1. Avoid the dog's exposure to strong sunlight. Even after 4 pm, you should move slowly in the shade of the tree, and avoid running too hard.
2. Bring plenty of water with you when going out, and rehydrate from time to time. Adequate drinking water is a good way to prevent heat stroke.
3. When taking the dog out, never leave the dog alone in the car, even for a short period of time.
4. For long-haired dogs and dogs with thick coats, the hair should be shaved to improve heat dissipation.
5. Fat dogs should pay attention to losing weight, because obese dogs produce high heat in hot weather and are more prone to heat stroke!
