The red-necked snake is medium in size, the full-length male red-necked snake (770+203) mm and the female red-necked snake (945+190) mm. The head and back are grass green, the upper lip scales are slightly lighter, some of the scale grooves are black, and the head and belly are dirty white. The trunk and the back of the tail are grass green, the skin between the scales in the neck area and the front part of the body is scarlet, and the trunk and the ventral surface of the tail are yellowish white.

The red-necked snake inhabits the vertical distribution range of altitude, and the coastal lowland ( Hainan and Hong Kong, China) to 850-2250 meters (West Yunnan Plateau). It mainly lives in the middle and low mountains below 1600 meters, and often preys on the paddy fields, slow streams and ponds in the valley dam area. It is active during the day and is mostly found near water ditches in farming areas. It mainly feeds on frogs, toads, and tadpoles, as well as small fish, insects, birds, and mice. The red-necked snake is widely distributed and has strong adaptability.
