The giant gecko is a protected animal. On December 10, 1988, with the approval of the State Council of China, and on January 14, 1989, the National Key Protected Wildlife List jointly promulgated by the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China listed the giant gecko as a national class II protected animal.

The number of giant geckos has decreased dramatically and is almost exhausted. Because it is used in traditional Chinese medicinal materials, large geckos have been caught in large numbers, the output has dropped sharply, and the price has risen sharply, thereby stimulating the masses to hunt and even fall into a state of depletion. In addition, the destruction of the natural environment and the gradual shrinking of the habitat of the giant gecko are also an important factor affecting its decline.
