The helmeted snake has been included in the Appendix of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora since September 13, 2007. The helmeted snake's habitat has been destroyed by urbanization and illegal rock removal, exposing the helmeted snake to predators and loss of habitat.

The helmeted snake is distributed in the Sydney Basin of New South Wales, Australia. Habitat will vary depending on temperature, age, sex and reproductive status. During the colder seasons, the helmeted snake roosts in the crevices of the cliffs to keep warm from the sun. When the temperature rises, the helmeted snake will go to the woodland and live in the hollow tree, and the young helmeted snake and the pregnant female will stay in the cooler and sheltered rocky areas.
