The male Carolina box turtle has a thinner carapace, a slightly longer shape, and a thick and long tail; the female turtle has a taller carapace, a rounder shape, and a thin and short tail. There are six subspecies, and they are very different. Two of them are only produced in Mexico, Terrapene carolina Mexicana and Terrapenecarolina Yucatana are rare. The other four species of U.S. are bred in large numbers.

Let's see what it eats. The Carolina box turtle is omnivorous, feeding on berries, mushrooms, earthworms, snails, and insects. Under artificial feeding, 50% animal protein such as crickets, mealworms, small fish, etc., 40% vegetables and fruits, and 10% weeds such as alfalfa or dandelion can be fed. The food intake is large, and wild individuals can live for 30 to 40 years. , was selected as North Carolina's state turtle in 1979. It has been listed in CITES secondary protection.
