The identification of male and female Indian star turtles is easy. The center of the plastron of the female turtle is flat, without depression, the tail is short and thin, the cloacal hole is closer to the green of the rear edge of the plastron, and the center of the plastron of the male turtle is concave, and the age is older The greater the degree of depression of the plastron, the longer and stout tail, and the farther the cloacal hole is from the rear edge of the plastron.

Indian star tortoise males compete for mates by pushing or turning hostile males upside down . Courtship is somewhat gentler than in many other species of tortoises, usually with little or no pushing, bumping and biting by females, and males purring when mating.
The Indian star tortoise lays 2-10 eggs each time, with a long diameter of 38-52 mm and a short diameter of 27-39 mm. The incubation period is about 47-180 days. Juveniles weigh between 25-45 grams, with an average shell length of about 35 mm. In the wild, females reach sexual maturity in 8-12 years and males in 6-8 years, but in captive turtles these times can be considerably shortened.
