Tamarisk gerbils are also very docile how they get along with people for a long time; however, tamarisk gerbils are not suitable as pets because they are strictly nocturnal animals. Activities start at dusk and stop before dawn. Tamarix gerbils are mainly active in foraging, and are agile, rushing in and out of many holes overnight, and there are more than 30 of them. The breeding and feeding activities of Tamarix gerbils are most active in spring and summer.

The tamarisk gerbil uses the green parts, seeds and fruits of various herbs and shrubs as main food. Compared with other gerbils, they like to eat food with higher water content. Tamarix gerbils also feed on animal foods such as beetles and ants in early spring and late autumn and early winter. Many crops and weeds in the farming area can also become food for tamarisk gerbils. It has the habit of storing grain in winter, including wheat, corn, wild oats, grass alfalfa, etc.
