In terms of reproduction, very little is known about wild sun bears. They may not have a fixed mating season, because there may be baby bears born throughout the year, and the mating period is generally between May and June each year. The gestation period of mother bears is about 95 days, and they also have delayed implantation of fertilized eggs. There have been records in zoos outside China, indicating that some female bears are pregnant for 174-240 days. The mother bear can give birth to about two cubs at a time, sometimes three, and the cubs can follow the mother bear around when they are about 2-5 months old.

Newborn baby bears are very fragile, weighing only about 300 grams, and have no hair on their bodies. They will live with their mothers until they become adults before they can live independently. As for sexual maturity, it usually takes 3 years, but also 6 years (2372 days), and females are earlier than males. The average lifespan is about 19-25 years, and in captivity, their maximum lifespan is about 24 years.
