The dark-bellied snow pheasant is a large (60 cm), yellowish-gray pheasant with striking white and dark chestnut patterns on the head and neck. White patches on the head and sides of the neck separate the two maroon lines and form a maroon band on the upper chest. The upper body is grey with thick yellow stripes. Upper chest gray with black spots; lower chest gray with black and maroon stripes, filiform feathers with white feather edges on both sides of the chest. The undertail coverts are nearly white. The exposed skin around the eyes is yellow. The eastern subspecies is the darkest.

Iris—dark brown; mouth—grey; feet—red or orange.
