In fact, for dogs, vehicles such as cars are just vague concepts that cannot be fully understood. Many dogs love to ride in cars, to watch the world go by at high speed, and to ride here and there with humans. A parked car represents an opportunity to get somewhere, and a moving car is a different animal. Some dogs understand that a car is galloping because someone is driving, while others think that a car is like a cow or a sheep that can move on its own.

The dangers of car chases

Because dogs' herding instincts are activated, they must chase big things. Hardly any dog could realize how fast, heavy and dangerous a car is. If dogs get hit by a car while chasing, they can learn a lesson: it's not a good idea to keep chasing. However, some dogs just can't stop, their instincts are stronger than their ability to choose self-preservation and safety. They need to rely on us humans to keep them away from moving cars.

Safety measures

When walking the dog, the owner must wear a firm leash for the dog to avoid accidents caused by the dog chasing the car. Muzzles can also be used if necessary, and some dogs will make a warning howl at moving vehicles.

Distract your dog. Bring your dog's favorite snacks when walking the dog. When it is instinctively aroused by a moving vehicle, call the dog's name and take out the snack to attract the dog's attention.
