1. Morphological characteristics

Liriodendron is a rare plant unique to China. It is a large deciduous tree with a height of 40 meters and a diameter of more than 1 meter. The branchlets are gray or grayish brown. The leaves are shaped like a jacket—the top of the blade is truncated, like the hem of a jacket; the sides of the blade are smooth or slightly curved, like the waist of a jacket; the sides of the blade protrude outward, like the sleeves of a jacket . Therefore, the tulip tree is also called the horse-lined tree. Flowers solitary at the top of the branch, with 9 perianth segments, 3 outer calyx-shaped, green, inner two petal-shaped yellow-green, with yellow stripes at the base, shaped like a tulip.

2. Growth habit of Liriodendron

Liriodendron likes light, warm and humid climate, and has a certain degree of cold resistance. The optimum temperature for growth is 15–28 degrees Celsius. Likes deep and fertile, moist and well-drained acidic and slightly acidic soils, not resistant to drought and moisture. Rapid growth and long life. Intolerant of pruning. Strong resistance to sulfur dioxide and chlorine. It grows fast, is drought tolerant, and is extremely resistant to pests and diseases. The flowers are large and beautiful, and the leaves are golden in autumn, like a yellow jacket. It is a precious street tree and garden ornamental tree.

3. Planting methods of Liriodendron

Liriodendron can be propagated by sowing, cuttings or layering. Mainly by seed propagation. Sow seeds in October, harvest seeds, dry and store them until spring sowing the following year. Due to the low germination rate of naturally pollinated seeds, artificial assisted pollination is required in advance. Cutting propagation, with soft branch cuttings, in late May to late June. Layered reproduction can be carried out in spring and autumn with high pressure. Liriodendron is not resistant to transplanting. It is better to transplant in spring when the buds are just sprouting. It is necessary to bring a complete soil ball. The planting point should not be too dry. Strengthen daily maintenance and management, and regularly fertilize 2-3 times during the annual growth period. Young trees also need to prune the side branches of the main trunk to promote their upward growth.
