1. Oncidium Morphological characteristics of

Oncidium is a compound stem aerial orchid with oval, fusiform, round or oblate pseudobulbs. Pseudocorm is a nutrient storage and supply organ, which increases with vegetative growth and shrinks with reproductive development. Around February, the new buds of the plant germinate from the base of the original pseudocorm, and gradually form a new pseudocorm. Anatomical observation found that the newly generated vegetative buds contained 13 to 14 nodes, of which pseudocorms were formed below the first node. After the pseudocorm matures, the axillary buds of the primorbasal differentiate into flower stems, which grow rapidly after July and bloom in mid-October. There are 1 to 3 leaves, which can be divided into thin-leafed species, thick-leafed species and sword-leafed species.

2. Growth habit of Oncidium

Oncidium is native to the United States, Mexico, Guyana and Peru. Proto-leaf type (or hard-leaf type) oncidium likes warm environment, while thin-leaf type (or soft-leaf type) and sword leaf type oncidium like cool climate. The optimum temperature for the growth of thick-leafed Oncidium is 18-25°C, and the temperature in winter is not lower than 12°C. The growth temperature of the thin-leaf type is 10-22°C, and the temperature in winter is not lower than 8°C. Oncidium prefers a humid and semi-shade environment. In addition to watering to increase the humidity of the substrate, it is more important to spray water on the leaves and ground. Increasing the air humidity is more beneficial to the growth of leaves and flower stems. The hard-leafed variety has strong drought tolerance and does not dry out without watering for a long time in winter.

3. Planting techniques of Oncidium

Oncidium is a compound stem orchid, which will grow offspring after the adult plant, and cut off the mother plant when the daughter plant has pseudobulbs That's it. Cut off the pseudobulb with 2 buds and plant it directly in the pot of water moss, maintaining a high air humidity, and quickly recover new buds and new roots. Propagation by division is generally carried out after flowering or in spring and autumn. Like most orchids, Oncidium likes higher air humidity, but because different species of Oncidium have different plant types, their resistance to drought is also different. The relative humidity should be controlled at 60% to 80% to increase the air humidity, while maintaining good ventilation.
