2021-05-28 / 199 Read

Delay refers to the ability of a dog to maintain a certain position stably and relatively statically for a certain period of time according to the command of the trainer. Delay is divided into three forms: sitting, lying, and standing. Delaying the training of subjects can balance the process of canine neural activity, which can lay a good foundation for the training of using subjects.

Second, the main conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus

Password: the password of a certain action required to be delayed.

Gesture: A gesture for which an action is requested to be delayed.

Main unconditioned stimuli: pulling the leash, long rope control.

3. Main training methods

This subject is completed sequentially in the training process in two stages: time and distance. On the basis of the conditioned reflex of time delay, distance delay is carried out. There are two types of training methods: trainer training and assistant training. The following takes sitting delay as an example to introduce the training method of delay subjects.

The personal training method of the trainer:

First, let the dog sit, and the trainer stands on the side or front of the dog with a leash. If the dog moves erratically, the trainer should immediately repeat the command and use the leash to stimulate the dog to maintain the sitting position. The dog can be rewarded as long as the dog maintains the sitting position for 30 seconds. Sitting and delaying stabilization can proceed to the next stage, namely distance delay training.

The method is based on the time delay, the trainer slowly leaves the dog, and the distance should gradually increase from near to far. During this process, if the dog automatically releases the delay, the trainer should immediately use the leash to stimulate the dog to return to the original position. If the dog can maintain a delay of three minutes within three meters, the dog can be rewarded. As the number of repetitions increases and the distance increases, a long leash should be used to control the dog to prevent the dog from automatically releasing the delay. If the trainer can leave the dog at a distance of more than 30 meters, the time can reach five minutes. The basic conditioned reflex of this subject is formed.

Trainer-assisted training method:

This method is basically the same as the personal training method. The difference is that the work of stimulating the dog is done by the assistant trainer. The advantage of this method is that it can correct the dog's self-release delay in a timely manner. But timid dogs should not use this method.
