The tails of some purebred dogs were first trimmed to prevent the dogs from being entangled by some low bushes when hunting, but now the tails are trimmed purely for aesthetics. Tail docking is not required if you are not attending a dog show just to keep a pet. Currently, breeds that require tail clipping include Boxers, Miniature Penschers, etc.
Docking the dog's tail should be done before the puppy's eyes are opened, which can relieve the dog's pain. The length of the tail must vary depending on the breed. Usually, only 1/3 of the tail is cut off in the Whistler dog; only one tail section is left in the Rottweiler dog, almost to the base of the tail; the miniature Pinscher is cut to the third tail section, It is better to be erect; the Doberman should be cut at the first or second tail section, which appears to be connected to the vertebrae, and should not be droopy or too long.
Tail docking for older dogs should also be done within 1-2 months of age. The method is as follows: the surgical site is sheared, sterilized, and anesthetized by local infiltration, and the bleeding is stopped by ligating with a tourniquet 3-4 cm above the surgical site. The assistant holds the tail in a horizontal position. The surgeon makes a circular incision of the skin with a scalpel, and then pushes it up 1-2 cm under the skin to cut it off at the joint. After the blood vessels are ligated and the bleeding is fully stopped, anti-inflammatory powder is sprinkled, the flap is sutured, and then disinfected with iodine. Surgery is best performed by a veterinarian.
Ear clipping is only done for certain fighting dogs or large-eared dogs for aesthetic or walking convenience. For example, after the ears are cut, the American Boxer appears to have a long neck and a well-proportioned bone path, without being bulky. The footwork is bright, light, and imposing. In England, ears are not allowed to be clipped, so the same Boxer appears sturdy, with a sturdy frame but a short neck. Ear clipping should generally be carried out within 2-3 months after birth. When cutting ears, put a mask on the dog, the assistant holds the head, first cut the hair in the operation area, then routinely sterilize, local infiltration anesthesia, use a scalpel to cut the skin at the predetermined place, bluntly separate the skin and cartilage, and separate it towards the root of the ear. 2 cm, the cartilage is excised there, the remaining skin naturally forms a cover, fully stop the bleeding, spread anti-inflammatory powder or penicillin powder, suture the skin, wrap it with gauze and absorbent cotton, and fix it with a bandage outside to prevent scratching.
The ear clipping must be performed according to the ear mold. Therefore, domestic pets do not need to clip their ears.
