Tarim Rabbit, also known as Nanjiang Rabbit, is one of the unique rabbit species in my country, distributed in the Tarim Basin and Lop Nur area of Xinjiang. The Tarim area is a desert area, and the plants are mainly low shrubs, and the Tarim rabbit hides in these shrubs during the day. In order to avoid predators, they are accustomed to come out at dusk and feed on the husks of grasses and shrubs, especially the twigs of plants.
At first glance, the Tarim Rabbit looks like a snow rabbit that has just shed its fur. Black hair, but a little attention can tell the difference. The biggest difference between the Tarim Rabbit and the Snow Rabbit is the size. Due to the long-term adaptation to the arid environment, the Tarim Rabbit weighs only 1.2-1.6 kg; the ears are much larger than those of the Snow Rabbit, up to 10 cm, which is easy to dissipate heat; The snow rabbit is as white as the snow rabbit, the whole body hair color is lighter than the snow rabbit, the hair on the inside of the body is light yellow, and the abdomen is completely white; the rabbit hair is shorter than the snow rabbit, and it belongs to the short-haired rabbit.
Summer is the breeding season of Tarim rabbits, which can produce 2~3 litters per year. Newborn baby rabbits have strong vitality, and the lactation period is only 3-5 days, after which they can live independently without their mothers.
Don't look at this little guy, it's a national second-class protected animal! It's a little weird to say that the rabbit, which is surprisingly fertile, is on the brink of extinction. Excessive hunting and urban expansion have led to the reduction of the Tarim rabbit's habitat and the threat to its living environment. Fortunately, the state has introduced relevant protection measures to limit hunting. Hopefully, in the near future, they will be able to resume their lives undisturbed by humans.
