Is it safe for rabbits to be ligated?

2021-10-20 / 254 Read

Surgery is as safe for rabbits as it is for any other animal. The procedure of ligating the rabbit can be safe if performed by an experienced rabbit doctor. The Rabbit Association has performed more than 1,000 ligation operations on rabbits, and only one percent died from anesthesia.

An experienced and knowledgeable rabbit veterinarian can ligate a healthy rabbit with minimal risk. Unfortunately, the vast majority of veterinarians are not sufficiently experienced in safe rabbit surgery.

Do not allow a surgeon with little or no knowledge of rabbits to operate on rabbits. With isoflurane anesthesia and proper surgical and post-operative techniques, ligation in rabbits is as safe as ligation in other animals.
