How do unicorns feed? Breeding and management of unicorns

2021-08-26 / 888 Read

The breeding of unicorns is very simple, as long as you prepare a suitable size pet box, put a pair of unicorns in the humus with leaf-rot organic matter, and add a The unicorns perch on the dead wood of mating, feed fruit or jelly, and soon the baby unicorns are born. Generally speaking, the life history process of Coleopteran insects belongs to complete metamorphosis, that is, it must go through four stages: egg, larval stage, pupal stage and adult stage, and each year is one generation. Unicorn larvae live on organic matter in the soil. As the age increases, the larvae's food intake also increases. The final instar larvae are almost as thick as an adult's thumb, and some are larger than the thumb.

Cage Construction

Most of the unicorn cages are made of wood, generally 80cm×60cm×100cm, surrounded by iron yarn or copper yarn, and the lower part of the cage is made of white iron sheet 79cm×59cm×30cm There are drawers on the top of the cages, making it easy to change the food, so the cages of this specification can raise 50 pairs of unicorns.

Adult rearing

The captured unicorns were quickly put into pre-made cages for rearing, and placed in the tin drawer under the rearing cages. 10cm of soil (for larvae to pupate), put larvae feed on top of the soil, for adults to lay eggs and larvae to feed, put a feed tray in the cage, and put some low-moisture and high-sugar fruits such as bananas and apples in the tray. For the adults to feed, the unicorns generally caught in August can lay eggs in large numbers day and night. By mid-October, when the larvae basically reach the third age, they can be soaked into commercial products.

Larvae rearing

Compost farming method: use 50% weeds and 50% sawdust on the field or side of the field, and the mixed pile grows 5-10m. Picture (5) 1~3m, about 1m high, then pour enough water and cover it with plastic paper to let it ferment, generally wait until there is no temperature in the compost, and the temperature of the fermented mixture is basically constant , Unicorn larvae live in the compost, can speed up the growth, this method is a good way for each farmer to raise the unicorn larvae easily.

Massage pond culture method: build ponds on flat ground, each pond is 5 to 10m2 in size, 60cm deep, fermented feed is laid in the pond, and the thickness is 50cm, and then the eggs or larvae of unicornis are put in. Yes, but it should be noted that the roof of the pool should also be equipped with a rain cover and sunshade equipment.

Wooden box breeding method: use wooden boards to nail into wooden boxes. The size of the box should be determined according to the number of larvae of unicornis, but it should not be too large, otherwise it will be difficult to move. Put the larvae feed inside, and then put the eggs or larvae in. This method is conducive to multi-layer stacking and easy indoor and outdoor moving.

Winter management

Overwintering management of unicorn larvae: unicorn larvae have a hibernation habit, generally before and after frost every year, when the temperature drops to 10 ℃ When left and right, the activity of the larvae weakened, their feeding decreased, and there were signs of hibernation. As the temperature continued to drop, the larvae of the unicorns entered hibernation one after another. Dormant for about half a year, until the next year when the temperature rises to above 10 ℃, it recovers and forages.

Controlling the temperature of the mixture: the measure of the cold resistance of an animal is called the supercooling point, which is the critical temperature at which the animal's body fluids can endure below 0°C without freezing. The physical structure and biological characteristics are different from other animals, and the ability to resist cold is also different. According to our preliminary experiments, the supercooling point of the larvae of unicornis is -1 °C, that is to say, in the case of -1 °C , the body fluid of the unicorn larvae will not freeze, and will not freeze to death in a short time. If the unicorn larvae are kept below -1°C for a long time, even after the temperature rises, the weak cannot recover. According to our experiments , Control the optimal temperature of unicornis larvae between 3 °C and 5 °C, the minimum temperature should not drop below 2 °C, and the maximum should not exceed 6 °C. Supplementation is easy to die, such as when the temperature is controlled at 2 ℃ ~ 6 ℃, the survival rate of overwintering larvae reaches 100%.

Master the dryness and humidity of the mixture: first of all, it is necessary to master the mixture of unicornis larvae, which should not be too dry or too wet, and the water content should be controlled between 65% and 67%. Spray or spray a small amount of water in the mixture, if it is too wet, it is not conducive to the overwintering of unicorns.

Strengthen cold protection measures: 1) In situ antifreeze: use straw to surround the cages, barrels, boxes, etc. around the breeding cages, and fasten them with plastic film, and make several ventilation holes as appropriate. 2) Catch the larvae of the overwintering unicornis in the jar, put some mixture, and move it to the leeward and sunny place to keep moisturizing and antifreezing. 3) Dig a pond on the spot as a winter sting hole for the unicorn larvae. Put some mixture in the hole. The size of the hole should be determined according to the number of unicorn larvae. After the unicorn larvae are placed, cover the top with 10cm of straw , this method works well. It should be noted that the winter stinging hole should be about 50cm deep, not too deep or too shallow, and should always check whether there is water accumulation.

Prevent the harm of mice: When the larvae of unicornis enter the hibernation period, the temperature of the mixture is higher than that of the outside world. It makes a hole and settles in it. Therefore, during the hibernation period of the unicorn larvae, to prevent rats from harming the unicorn larvae, first, take precautions in the wintering place of the unicorn larvae to prevent the entry of mice. You can also use mouse traps, lead wire cages to trap, Block the burrows of rats, but do not use drugs to kill rodents, to prevent the death of unicorn larvae from poisoning.

Feeding Advantages

1. Less and no risk: the larvae of the unicorn are readily available, and various weeds and sawdust that have rotted Wait, almost no investment is required; the adults of the unicorn eat some fruits with low water content and high sugar such as bananas and apples that people eat leftover, so it is said that the investment in raising the unicorn is less and there is no risk.

2. Quick effect and high profit: Generally, in August, the caught unicorns have been mated, and they can lay eggs in large numbers. Hypertrophy, usually C-shaped, about the size of an egg, up to 25-30g, can be soaked into commercial products.
