Canine herpesvirus infection is an acute, afebrile, and fatal disease in newborn puppies. Dogs older than 21 days of age mainly present with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection. 【Symptoms】
The incubation period of canine herpesvirus infection is In 4-6 days, puppies under 21 days of age can cause a fatal infection. Dementia in the initial stage of the sick dog, depression, lack of milk, weakness, difficulty in breathing, sensitive abdominal pain under pressure examination, soft and yellow stools. The body temperature is not high, the dog keeps howling, restless, trembling. Some dogs show symptoms of rhinitis, serous rhinorrhea, widespread spotty hemorrhage on the surface of the nasal mucosa, and red papules on the inner thigh skin. Optosis, epilepsy, and loss of consciousness in the later stage of sick dogs. Most dogs die 24-48 hours after symptoms appear. Recovered dogs can cause permanent neurological symptoms, ataxia, blindness, etc.
Dogs older than 21-30 days mainly have symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, coughing and sneezing. Pneumonia symptoms can occur when secondary co-infections occur. Adult bitches are mainly infected with reproductive tract, and the vaginal mucosa has diffuse vesicular lesions, which can cause miscarriage, stillbirth and infertility in pregnant bitches. In male dogs, chronic inflammation of the penis and foreskin can be seen, and there may be a lot of purulent secretions in the foreskin.
【Prevention and Treatment】
Currently, there is little progress in vaccine development for this disease, and there is no vaccine available.
Injection of self-made serum from recovered bitches or pups can prevent the death of infected puppies. The sick dogs were given heat preservation (about 37°C), and at the same time, the dogs with upper respiratory tract symptoms were given broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and rehydration therapy.
