Cystitis symptoms and prevention in dogs

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder mucosa and submucosa. Female dogs develop more cystitis than male dogs. What are the symptoms of cystitis in dogs, and how can they be treated?

Symptoms

West HighlandWhite Terrier

1. The characteristic symptom is painful frequent urination. The sick dog urinates frequently or in a urination posture, but only discharges a small amount of urine each time or continuously discharges it in drops (urine streak), and shows pain and anxiety.

2. In severe cases, due to the swelling of the bladder neck mucosa or the spasmodic contraction of the bladder sphincter, it can cause urinary retention, and the sick dog is in pain and groaning.

3. The symptoms of chronic cystitis in dogs are similar to acute cystitis, but the degree is milder and the course of disease is longer.

Palpate the bladder for tenderness and accumulation of urine, puncture for urinalysis and urine culture. In urinary tract infections, urinalysis may show increased hemoglobin and protein, increased numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells, and bacteria, and an alkaline pH (especially with urease-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus or Proteus), and fungi may also be found. If clinical symptoms persist after long-term antibiotic use, there may be urinary stones or tumors, and X-ray analysis should be done.

The principles of treatment of canine cystitis are: antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, symptomatic treatment. The specific points are as follows:

1. Improve feeding and management, make them rest properly, and feed them with non-irritating, nutritious and digestible feed. High protein feeds should be appropriately restricted.

2. Rinse the bladder with disinfectant or astringent. First use a catheter to drain the accumulated urine in the bladder, rinse with lukewarm saline repeatedly, and then rinse with liquid. It can be sterilized with 0.05% potassium permanganate solution and 0.1% Levorno ear solution. 1%-3% boric acid solution, 1%~2% alum solution, etc. can be used for convergence.

3. For severe cystitis, after flushing the bladder, inject 800,000~1.2 million units of penicillin (dissolved in 50~100ml of distilled water) into the bladder, and apply penicillin, streptomycin or other antibiotic.

4. Urinary tract disinfectants can be used appropriately.

5. Pay attention to prevent the invasion and infection of microorganisms. When performing catheterization, it should be disinfected and sterile. Diseases of other urinary organs should be treated in time to prevent the spread.
