In the 1970s, a cat living in Kenya British woman JENI SLATER adopted a female cat and her kittens, who later became the originator of Sokoke. A friend of JENI's, Canadian native CLORIA MOLDRUP, later brought the two kittens back to Denmark and started a regular improvement program in 1980. All cats are sourced from JENI SLATER's cat house. MOLDRUP started a breeding program with other breeding specialists. In 1983, the variety was named Sokoke. It was officially recognized in Denmark in 1992 and gradually recognized in other countries. FIFe officially recognized the breed in 1993.
