The red-necked trout snake has been included in the List of Beneficial or Important Economic and Scientific Research Terrestrial Wildlife Protected by the State issued by the State Forestry Administration of China on August 1, 2000. It has been listed in the 2012 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species ver 3.1 - Least Concern (LC).

The red-necked trough snake has a wide distribution range, strong fecundity, and is not close to the critical value standard for species survival, and its distribution area or fluctuation range is less than 20,000 square kilometers, habitat quality, population size, fragmented distribution area, and stable population trend, so it was evaluated as a species with no existential crisis.
