The hawk-billed tortoise is an ectotherm and needs to hibernate. When the weather turns warm in March and April, they begin to hunt for food and come into estrus. From May to September, their appetite is most prosperous. In the late autumn and early winter, the hawk-billed tortoise burrows into the sand, grass or hibernates underwater.
During their hibernation, we need to give them irregular Check, touch their legs and they should respond. If hawkbills wake up from hibernation when the temperature is still low, we should do something to encourage them to continue hibernating, such as re-covering them with newspaper or sand. The ambient temperature of the hawk-billed tortoise cannot drop below 5°C during hibernation, otherwise it will die from excessive freezing. It is also possible to adopt the method of heating and feeding to prevent the hawk-billed tortoise from hibernating. However, the frequency and food intake of the hawk-billed tortoise will be reduced to a certain extent in winter.
