Mississippi map turtles are difficult to distinguish between males and females when they are hatchlings. Generally speaking, it is easier to distinguish between males and females after at least two or three years of breeding. Distinguishing between males and females of Mississippi map turtles can mainly be done from the following aspects.

1. There is a comparison of the appearance of the male Mississippi map turtle and the female Mississippi map turtle big difference. Especially their tails, male Mississippi map turtles have thicker tails, but female Mississippi map turtles have relatively short tails.

2. The location of the excretory hole of the Mississippi map turtle is different. The excretory hole of the male Mississippi map turtle is closer to the tail, while the excretory hole of the female Mississippi map turtle is farther from the tail.

3. The plastron of the Mississippi map turtle is also different. The plastron of the male Mississippi map turtle has obvious depressions, while the plastron of the female Mississippi map turtle has no concave part.

4. Look at the patterns under the belly of the Mississippi map turtle. The female Mississippi map turtle has more patterns, and the male Mississippi map turtle has fewer patterns.
