How to distinguish male and female spotted mud turtle

The males have horny junctions on their thighs and lower limbs, and both males and females have horn-like tail spines at the ends of their tails. In addition, we can distinguish between males and females by looking at whether there are scale-shaped horny junctions on the inside of the hind legs. Males are larger in size and have long and thick tails; while females are usually about 15 cm in length and have shorter tails.

It takes 4-6 years for male spotted mud turtle to reach sexual maturity. The carapace is between 6.0-6.5CM, while it takes 6-8 years for females to reach sexual maturity, and the carapace is between 7.0-7.5. Female turtles can lay two clutches of eggs in a year, (May to June. In mid-March or early July) there are about 1-4 per litter, and females tend to lay their eggs in sandy ground and not deep burrows or near the river.
