The body is covered with tiny comb scales, resembling shark skin. The spines of the dorsal and anal fins are sharp; the pectoral fins are nearly triangular; the caudal fins are nearly truncate or fan-shaped. The adult fish is uniformly grayish-white, with several inconspicuous dark short vertical bands in the center of the body. The snout of the adult fish has a prominent bulge, the fins of the body are gray-white to blue, and the tail handle and front end have 6 brown scales, hence the name Six Shield Saw Tail Hanging.
