The female chicken turtle has a wide body, a short tail, and the cloaca hole is closer to the base of the tail; the male chicken turtle is narrow and long, with a long and thick tail, the cloaca hole is farther from the tail base, and the claws are long.

Look at the pattern on the abdomen, the dense ones are male chicken turtles, and the sparse ones are female chickens turtle. The individual differences between males and females are very different. The female turtles are larger and the male turtles are smaller; the male turtles have long forelimbs and claws, and the female turtles do not have this feature; the female turtles have a slightly shorter tail and the male turtles have a longer tail.
