Salamander is ferocious and carnivorous. It feeds on aquatic insects, fish, crabs, shrimps, frogs, snakes, turtles, mice, birds, etc. Its predation method is waiting for rabbits. Its teeth cannot chew, but it just swallows the food whole. and then slowly digested in the stomach. Artificial feeding is better with natural bait, mainly plankton, insects, meat and fish, shellfish and so on.

There are obvious individual differences and seasonal changes in the food intake and feeding frequency of salamanders. Adjusted for different individuals, each feeding amount is equivalent to 2-4% of the body weight of the salamander, feeding once every 4-7 days in winter, once every 3-5 days in spring, and once every 2-3 days in summer. In autumn, it is fed once every 2 to 5 days.
