The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit grazes grass, alfalfa, vegetables, and fruit in the spring and summer, and bark, buds, twigs, maple, and dogwood in the winter. Eastern cottontail rabbits are highly territorial. It is nocturnal, active at dawn and night, and has no habit of hibernating. When running, it can jump up to 15 feet to help it avoid predators.

When being chased, run in a zigzag route, Predators can't track its scent, making it harder to keep up. Its speed can reach 18 miles per hour. It prefers places where it is easy to hide, but also adapts to wilderness environments. Forests, swamps, weeds, bushes, or clearings, in short, where they can burrow, are ideal habitats.

The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit species is found in grasslands and scrubland in the eastern and southwestern United States, southern Canada, eastern Mexico, Central and South America. It is abundant in the Midwest of North America, and has also been found in New Mexico and Arizona.
