The back of the Yunnan flying squirrel is dark chestnut from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, and the base of the hair is gray. The sides of its face and under the eyes and ears are yellowish-grey with maroon, and the chin is darker.

The ventral surface of Yunnan flying squirrel is yellowish-white, and some are slightly in the midline Maroon, with a darker maroon on the underside of the wings. Its ear hairs are sparse, maroon at the front and black at the back.
