The coat of chinchillas is beautiful gray-blue, and the hair shaft shows alternating shades of color. Medium and deep, but nearly black on the back from the tip of the nose to the caudal end, slightly lighter on the sides, with a narrow, clearly demarcated white band on the belly.

At present, through artificial crossbreeding, it has been bred into sapphire, beige, charcoal, Totoro in colors such as black, white and silver.
