The sexual maturity of the English Bulldog, both male and female, is much earlier than its physical maturity. English Bulldogs can only undertake the task of breeding offspring after they reach physical maturity (that is, adult weight), especially if the female dog is mated early, both mother and child will be adversely affected. Therefore, foreign breed associations generally require 18 or 24 months of age to mate, otherwise, the offspring will not be registered. That is to say, English Bulldogs do not give birth until they are about 2 years old.

The English Bulldog bitches only come into heat twice a year, mainly in spring and autumn. When the bitch is in heat, the best mating time is about 11-13 days after the vaginal secretion of blood-filled fluid. And if it is a second breeding English Bulldog, the selection is suitable for 9-11 days. If the breeder does not know when the female dog has blood in the genitals, it is best to observe the time when the dog's vulva water begins to disappear.
Although English bulldog bitches can breed two litters a year, too many births will affect the physique of both the bitch and the pups. According to the age and health of the bitch, it is more suitable to have three litters in two years or one calf a year. Bitches over 9 years old are generally not suitable for breeding.
