Scottish Deerhound

History

The Deerhound is a wild dog from the Scottish Highlands, England. So call again. It is one of the oldest dog breeds in existence that has been recognized as pure blood. During the British Victorian era, it was advocated that the hunting grounds were open to the outside world. The Scottish Deerhound is very similar, but the terrier is lighter in build, with smoother fur and a tapered muzzle, reflecting the influence of pedigree, and is even known as the Coarse Lingti. Originally bred for deer hunting in Scotland, it was used by Scottish chiefs to hunt deer in the Middle Ages. It is strong and its rough fur can withstand harsh climates. It was once a hot dog of the Scottish aristocracy and became the royal dog of Scotland. It cannot be owned below the rank of earl.

FCI Standard

Header

Wide at the ears, narrowing gradually towards the eyes, muzzle narrowing significantly towards the tip of the nose. The muzzle is pointed, but the teeth and lips are flat. The head is long, flat but not round, raised very slightly above the eyes, but not close to the stop. The hair on the head is of medium length and somewhat softer than the rest of the hair. The nose is black (blue in some bluish-camel dogs) and slightly curved. Light-colored dogs should have a black muzzle. Should have a silky mustache and a nice beard.

Ears

Set high. When at rest, fold back like a dog, although, when excited, it will bulge, but not without creases, sometimes with semi-erect ears. Standing ears are a defect. Large, thick ears that hang flat on the side of the head or heavy or long hair are serious faults. Ears should be soft, smooth, and feel like mouse fur to the touch, preferably smaller. No overly long coat or bangs, but sometimes silky, silvery hair on the body and tips of the ears. All Deerhounds, regardless of color, should have black or dull black ears.

Neck and shoulder blades

The neck is long, about the same length as a Greyhound. But too long is neither necessary nor appropriate. The job is different from that of the greyhound. A good deerhound should have a mane, which sometimes changes the apparent length of the neck. In any case, the neck needs to be very strong to keep animals like deer in check. The nape is very prominent, the head is drawn forward, and the throat is well-defined and angled. The shoulder blades are sloping, and the shoulder blades are set back without a wide distance from each other. Anti-shoulders or scapulae that are too straight are serious faults.

Tail

Relatively long, slightly tapered at the tip, extending to 1.5 inches above the ground, or 1.5 inches below the hock. When he is at rest, he hangs straight or slightly bent, and when moving or excited, the tail is curled, but not raised over the back. Covered with a lot of hair, the hair is thick and bristle, the lower half of the hair is slightly longer, and the slight bangs at the end are not a fault. A curly or ringed tail is a defect

Eyes

Dark in color, usually dark brown, tan or hazel. Very light eye color is inappropriate, eyes are moderately full, soft when resting, but sharp and distant when excited. The eye rims are black.

Body

Similar in structure to a greyhound, but larger and with more bone. The chest should be deep and not broad, but not too narrow or flat. Adequate girth shows good lung capacity. The loin is rounded and drooping toward the tail. A too straight back is undesirable, such a structure is not suitable for climbing, and it is very unsightly.

Legs and Feet

Legs wide and flat, with sufficient width at the front legs and elbows ideal. Of course, the front legs must be as straight as possible. The feet are compact and the toes are well positioned. The hindquarters are dropped, as broad and powerful as possible. The hips are spaced apart. The narrow hindquarters show a lack of power, the knees are moderately sloping, the distance from the rump to the hocks is large, and the hindquarters are broad and flat. Cow limbs, weak flanks, straight knees, and splayed claws are all serious faults.

Coat

Coarse setae on body, neck, and extremities, 3 to 4 inches long; hair on head, chest, and abdomen soft. There are bangs on the inside of the front and back legs, but they cannot form "feathers" like that. Woolly hair is a defect. Well-tensioned filamentous hair intermingled with stiff hair is preferable to woolly hair. The climate of the United States is prone to mixed coats. The ideal coat is a thick, tight, coarse coat that feels rough and dry to the touch.

Color

It depends on personal preference, but dark blue-gray is definitely the first choice, the others are different shades of gray, speckled colors, dark colors are usually preferred . Yellow, sandy red, reddish-brown, especially those with black muzzles and ears, are all treated equally. White is unanimously opposed, but is permitted except in dark dogs with white on the chest and toes. But not ideal, because the Deerhound is a uniform color dog. A white rib on the head or a white scarf is a disqualification. While preferably no white, some of the best breeds also develop a slight white tip on the tip of the tail.

Height

Height of males: about 30-32 inches, can be taller if it is well-proportioned and not rough, but it is rare.

Height of the female: 28 inches and above, as long as it doesn't appear rough and does not reject larger females, the maximum height for her should not be close to the male's height, as it is impossible to have a very large male.

Weight

Males from 85 to 110 pounds; females from 75 to 95 pounds.
