History:

Originated in the 10th century. Possibly ancient descendants, according to uncertain sources. It has been used as a police dog in Hungary because of its high obedience and was used as a police dog. The Second World War effectively ended the breeding of dogs in Hungary, but by that time it had been bred as a companion dog. This adaptable dog is willing to take care of sheep and can be easily trained as a water-seeking dog. In 1912, Amy Ritterset began a project to restore dogs. Two types of coats were recorded for the Polly; coarse, unkempt and curly. In 1915, the first standard for identifying puppies was established, and in 1924 the FCI improved the standard. The latest restoration of the Poli was presented at the Budapest Dog Show in August 1923. The breed is divided into three categories: heirloom or shaggy, grand or show dog and dwarf. The 1934 standard classified animals according to height into (50.0 cm or more), (39.9 to 45.0 cm) and dwarf wimps (less than 35.1 cm). On February 91, 1935, in the old Hungarian Register of Fine Breeds, there were recorded four different sizes of Polis: large dogs, medium dogs, . Medium body size is the most common.

FCI standard:

Overall appearance : Strong, cube-shaped, well-balanced, medium-sized. It is energetic, sharp and active. The most notable feature is its thick and messy fur, coupled with its silent footsteps, and its characteristic movement form makes it very suitable for shepherding work in difficult areas on the Hungarian steppe. Agility, combined with ingenuity and physical stability, are the most important factors in this long work.

Size, Proportion and Structure: Height is measured from senior to ground, ideal height is 43.2 cm for males and 40.6 cm for females. Above or below this measurement range is also permissible. Lengths measured from senior to ground and from shoulder to rump are approximately equal, making the body of the dog close to a square. Bone of medium size.

Head: The head is medium in size and proportional to the body. Almond eyes are deep-set, rather large, dark brown with black or dark bluish-gray edges. Ears set slightly above eye level, hanging, medium in size, V-shaped, about half the length of the skull. Skull slightly rounded, medium breadth. The indentation between the forehead and the snout on the head is well defined, but not steep. The muzzle is firm and straight, 1/3 the length of the skull. The nose is always black. The drooping upper lip and gums are also black or dark blue-gray. The drooping upper lip is tight. Mouth full of teeth, relatively large and close in bite.

Neck, Topline and Trunk: The neck is strong, muscular, of medium length and not hoarse. The back is flat and strong, of medium length, with a slight sloping rump. The chest is moderately broad and deep, and the ribs are well elastic. The waist is short, strong, moderately curled up. Tail extension blends with topline.

Forequarters: Shoulders return well. The upper extremity is approximately equal in length to the scapula and forms a 90° angle. The forelegs are erect and strong, with medium sized bones, strong and elastic flanks. If there are upper claws, remove them. Round, strong paws with arched toes and thick pads. The dog stands upright on the pads. Footpads and nails black or dark blue-grey.

Hindquarters: The hindquarters are well developed, well muscled, with free extension of the knee joints, balanced ventral and dorsal. The hocks are perpendicular to the ground and hang well. If there are upper claws, they should be removed. The toes are the same as the forelimbs.

Coat: Dense and rich. The outer coat is wavy or curly, but never silky. The undercoat is soft, chaotic and dense. The coat is easily tufted and, if allowed to develop naturally, will form a braided rope as an adult. Braided ropes are fluffy and vary in shape and thickness, either flat or round, depending on the texture of the coat and the balance of the undercoat and the outer coat. The state of the coat exhibited by the Polly is either woven into a rope or pulled down. A double coat with the correct texture in appearance is essential. With age, the coat can become very long and even touch the ground; however, it is necessary to consider adequate length for proper evaluation of coat quality and texture, not to consider defects in young dogs or young dogs due to coat condition.

Colour: Only reddish-brown-black, black, shades of grey and white are acceptable colours, however white spots not exceeding 5.1cm on the chest are also permitted. Other greys, blacks or whites, may be allowed to mix with black and grey if the general shape of the dog remains the same colour. Regardless of the color of the outer coat, the entire pigmented skin of the dog is slightly bluish or grayish.

Gait: The Puli is typically a lively and acrobatic dog with a light, quick gait and instant change of direction. The gait is most evident during the dog's unhurried trot: the pace is fast, vigorous, and the strides are small, but never broken or unnatural. When running with big strides, the dog will move forward smoothly and efficiently, and the steps can be stretched and driven freely. It is the basic condition that the Polly dog has.

Personality: Due to its friendly, intelligent, family-loving nature as a companion animal, coupled with its sensitive, suspicious nature, this breed is a good watchdog. Extreme timidity will affect the quality of the dog.
