Lakeside Terrier

History:

is one of the oldest working slogans and is still known today. Before the establishment or official records, the lakeside terrier was bred and trained to work in the lake areas of England, and this kind of work ability is very strong. The name "lakeside" is actually a modern name, called Patterdale Terrier in ancient times.

Lakeland Mountain farmers have been developing hunting with hounds and terriers, whose job is to prevent Fox and sea otter. Breeding of dogs prevailed there, never a puppy was killed, it was popular to send dogs among friends and hunters, and the dogs were trained to be the best laborers and preserved in tradition.

The great thing about this native terrier is the underground long-range hunting. In 1871, Lord lonsdale was recorded as having a lakeside terrier crawling under a rock for more than 7 meters to track a sea otter. To rescue the Lakeside Terrier, a massive excavation was necessary. Finally, after 3 days of work, the dog was found and rescued, and no other dog has had a tougher experience. This type of dog breaks the blockade under the ground for 10 to 12 days, and is still alive after being rescued. Not possible with other breeds.

Around 1896, the criteria for distinguishing the Lakeside Terrier from other similar-looking terriers (such as the Spitz and Spitz) were made at agricultural exhibitions throughout the Great Lakes region. There is great interest in this ancient breed, and the owner of the hound or other experienced hunter is its judge. At that time, there were mainly blue-gray, dark-brown, red or khaki and a small amount of white lakeside terriers. Later, the classification of color was replaced, and it was mainly divided into two categories: white and variegated. In conclusion, workability is always an aspect to consider.

White lakeside terriers generally work with otter hounds because many times hounds are excited to drive otters from under tree roots or drains and darker terriers toss them in mud. drag out.

Experienced terrier breeders believe that the distant ancestor of the Lakeside Terrier is somewhat similar to the ancestor of the terrier. In fact, there was clear evidence that the Lakeside Terrier was closely related to what was later considered a descendant of the Burlington Terrier.

Lakeside Terrier

Origin:

Britain, originated in the 18th century. Originally called (The Patterdale Terrier), it was developed from the mating of the Bedlington Terrier and the old-fashioned English Wire Terrier in the lakeside areas of northern England. Originally there were many branches, and in 1912, they were classified into one category. Similar to the Welsh Terrier but slightly smaller, his body is deep and narrow, allowing him to burrow into rock well and get his work done. He has long enough legs that he can adapt to all kinds of rough terrain. Used to hunt small animals such as badgers, foxes and otters in the past, it can hunt down prey in water and uneven terrain. This beautiful breed later transformed into a popular companion and show dog. It won the first prize in the exhibition in 1967 and 1968 respectively. It was recognized by the American Dog Breeders (AKC) in 1921.

Character Cheerful and friendly to humans. Full of confidence, but weak aggression. Be vigilant and always ready to go. The weak gait is very elegant, with a swagger. Timidity, especially very timidity, is a serious defect for adult lakesides, and conversely, a strong aggressive tendency is also a serious defect. Although the Lake Terrier has been around for generations, it has a better appearance. The Lakeside Terrier has a dense, waterproof coat with medium length and powerful jaws, strong hindquarters, a short and strong back, and well-developed legs. In addition to being indomitable and brave, the Lake Terrier has an attractive quiet personality.

Lakeside Terrier's FCI Standard

FCI Criteria:

【General Appearance】Breed for hunting skilled predators in the mountains of the North Lake District of England. The Lakeside Terrier is small, square in appearance and strong in body. The deep, narrow torso allows it to drill into caves, and the long legs allow it to walk over rough terrain more easily. The neck is long, the shoulder blades are high, the midline of the back is short, and the tail is high and raised. The Lake Terrier is happy, friendly, and self-respecting, but not aggressive. Alert, always on alert. The steps are light, graceful, straight, light and well-span. The head is right-angled, the muzzle is strong and powerful, and the ears are V-shaped. The coat is dense, rigid, slightly longer around the mouth and on the feet.

【Size, Proportion and Structure】The ideal height for an adult male is 36.8 cm, no more than 3.8 cm above and below. The female dog is 2.5 cm shorter than the male dog. The average adult male dog weighs about 7.71 kg. The other heights are proportionally more or less. The overall shape is square, and the female dog may be slightly longer than the male dog. Its coordination and proportions are paramount. Short-legged, overweight or underweight, atypical breed individuals are considered inferior dogs. The Lakeside Terrier is strong in body, so that it is strong, delicate and not rough.

Dogs of reddish-brown or reddish-brown and dark-brown, with eyes ranging from dark fawn to pale brown with brown edges. In dogs of other colors, the eye color ranges from light brown to black with dark circles. The ears are small, V-shaped, slightly curved at the top of the head at the crease, with the inside edge close to the side of the head, and the ears point towards the outer corner of the eye. Straight nose bridge. The head is symmetrical. At right angles, the length from the back of the head to the corner of the mouth is equal to the distance from the corner of the mouth to the end of the nose. The proportions of the head are strictly required. The front face is too long or too short, and the wedge-shaped head is not qualified. A black nose with a pink nose with hyperpigmentation is acceptable but not ideal. A reddish-brown nose and lips are only accepted in reddish-brown-coated dogs. A pink or visibly spotted nose is not ideal. Black lips, strong upper and lower jaws. The teeth are relatively large and may have a scissors or pincer bite with the margins facing each other or slightly protruding beyond the lips. Teeth that are too long or too short are not eligible.

[Neck, Topline, and Trunk] The neck is long, not thick but strong, with a well-proportioned throat, slightly curved, and gradually widening towards the shoulders. The tail is upright when raised, not ideal for those bent towards the head. The pelvis is broad and angular, and the pelvis of male dogs is more developed than that of female dogs. Curly tails are considered insufficient.

【Forequarter】The shoulder angle is suitable. The upper edge of the scapula is in line with the elbow, which in this case is longer than the upper arm, allowing a reasonable angle between them. The shoulders are muscular and smooth. Whether standing or exercising, keep the elbows close to the body, allowing the entire dog to lean forward. When viewed from the front or side, the forelegs are strong and straight. The metacarpal bones are also straight. Feet round, pointing forward, with strong toes. The coat on the crown of the head, ears, chest, shoulders and back of the tail is short and smooth. The coat on the trunk is 1.3 to 2.5 cm longer and may be wavy or straight. The feathers on the face and legs are longer and should be brushed frequently and have a brittle texture. The legs are cylindrical. The coat on the face is traditionally trimmed, the hair on the head can grow up to the eyeliner, and the head is at a right angle from any angle. From the front, the eyes are quite pronounced, showing the unique appearance of the Lakeside Terrier.

【Color】Lakeside Terrier comes in a variety of colors, and all colors are recognized. Specifically blue, black, reddish brown, red and khaki. In dogs marked with a saddle, there are saddle-like black markings on the body, covering the nape, back, sides and upper side of the tail, and the color of the saddle may be blue, black, reddish-brown, or gray. The color of the dog (head, throat, shoulders, feet) is khaki or golden tan. Variegations are red or yellowish mixed with varying proportions of black, blue or reddish-brown.

【Gait】 Straight forward. When going back and forth, the legs are straight and the feet are neither abducted nor adducted, the elbows are attached to the chest wall, and the hocks are straightened. But that doesn't affect the movement.

【Temperament】The typical characteristics of the Lakeside Terrier are boldness, joy, friendliness, self-confidence, and a swaggering demeanor. Timidity is a major disadvantage of adult dogs. Conversely, dogs that are overly aggressive are inferior.
