History:

This breed has a long history on Swiss farms, and its numbers began to decline in the mid-19th century. It was almost endangered in the early 20th century. Only a small number of purebred dogs survived and bred with short-haired dogs. Now the number is gradually increasing. 1968 Introduced to the United States. Overall Appearance: Mainly used for pulling carts, with Features that are compatible with this function. The coat consists of three colors and is very striking, large and powerful.

Size, Proportion and Structure: Body Shape - 64.8 to 72.4 cm tall for males and 59.7 to 68.6 cm for females. The ratio of length to height is 10:9. Body plump.

Head: Expression - lively, gentle. The eyes are dark brown, medium in size, neither protruding nor sunken. The eye sockets are black. The ears are medium in size, set high at the base, triangular, slightly rounded at the tips, and drop down close to the head when at rest. When alert, ears prick up. The upper end of the ear is level with the top of the skull. The skull is flat and broad, and the bridge of the nose is inconspicuous. The muzzle is almost as long as the skull. Muzzle blunt, but not prominent. The skull is straight and strong. The nose is black. Lips are not drooping. Scissor bite.

Neck, Topline and Torso: Neck - Well muscled, of medium length, with no sagging skin. Topline - horizontal. Chest - Deep and broad, with a slightly prominent sternum. The shoulder blades are high and long. The torso is full. Ribs stretched. The waist is broad and strong. The rump is long, broad and rounded. The tail is long at the hock joint, drooping when resting, and raised when excited. The tailbone should be straight.

Forequarters: Shoulders long, flat, well muscled and strong. The forelegs are straight and strong. The forefoot is slightly sloping, but not weak. The forefeet is round and compact, with arched toes. Dewclaws can be removed.

Hindquarters: The thighs are broad and well muscled. The knee is flexed, tapering towards the tarsus. Viewed from behind, the hocks are perpendicular to the ground. Dewclaws must be removed. The hind feet are compact, neither in nor out.

Coat: The outer coat is dense, 2.5 to 4.4 cm long. The undercoat is thick.

Color: The base color is jet black. The plaques are rust and white. Symmetrical plaques are ideal. Rust-coloured patches appear above the eyes, on both cheeks, on the sides of the chest, on the limbs and on the lower part of the tail. The muzzle is white. The white patches on the chest form a "cross". The tip of the tail and feet are white, and the legs are three-colored. A white collar may appear on the neck.

Gait: Front quarters extended, rear quarters strong. Back level.

Temperament: Brave, loyal, alert, very good. Being overly nervous or aggressive is a serious flaw.
