History Native to England, it originated in the 17th century. The fourth generation of the Duke of Richmond in Banffshire, Scotland, was co-bred with the Duke of Gordon, and was crossed with different breeds such as the Collie. In 1620 Markham wrote about a black-brown fingerhound, and in 1820 the 4th Duke of Gordon had a tri-coloured or black-brown greyhound, which, though not very fast, had stamina and a keen and very accurate sense of smell. In 1842, George Blunt imported a pair of hounds into the United States, named Rake and Rachel. Rake is almost all white and has a black vest, Rachel is black and tan, and Rachel was gifted to Daniel Webster. |
