Finnish Lapphound originated in the 17th century. Originally bred by the Lapp people who live in the northernmost parts of Europe, the Lapphound's home area extends across northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. A similar species also occurs in the adjoining regions of Russia.
In order to distinguish it from the Lapponian Herder, it is more accurate to call the Finnish Lapphund the Finnish Lapphund. Finnish means "Finnish", Lapp means the area north of the Arctic Circle in Finland, and hund means "dog" in German.
For hundreds of years, Finnish Lapphund has been used as a reindeer herder and watchdog in Finno, Scandia and northern Russia. Its breed standard is Finnish. It was established by the Industry Club for herding dogs in 1945, when the Finnish Lapphund and the Lapponian Herder were regarded as one kind of dog. It was not until 1966 that the Lapponian Herder was officially named, and it has since been distinguished from the Finnish Lapphund. Both breeds are used for herding, so it would be inaccurate to translate Finnish Lapphund into Finnish Lapland Hound and Lapponian Herder as Finnish Reindeer Dog.
