History: In the absence of early records There must be some speculation about the exact origin of the Curly Retriever, but there is no doubt that it is one of all the ancient breeds of hunting dogs among the breeds of dogs classified as Retrievers. It is generally believed that the breed originated from the English water spaniel and hunting setter in the 16th century. Others assert that the Philharmonic water spaniel is its ancestor, and it is more likely the descendant of multiple crosses of this breed, as evidenced by the change from liver red to black and curly hair. Whatever the hound is its ancestor, it is possible to conclude that a breed combines the characteristics of a water hound and a setter hound. St. John (stjohn), which has this combination of characteristics, is recorded as the first to be brought to England with an overseas ship when it imported cod meat from Newfoundland in 1835. This unusual St. John's dog is sometimes called by some early authors. This fact adds some confusion to today's dogs. Back in 1880, poodles were crossed with repeats. This crossbreed has a dense, curly coat as a popular hunting dog after the Old English Water Hunter, which was first shown at the Birmingham Show in 1960. In 1889, the breed was exported to Denmark, where it was long used for teal hunting and California in the United States. In Australia, they are also used to hunt teal in the marshes and lagoons on the Murray River. They are widely appreciated for their dependable ability in the water and keen hunting ability. The first of the Curl Retrievers was established in England in 1896. The breed was introduced to the United States as early as 1907, but was first registered with the AKC in 1924.

Character: Confident, determined, arrogant, intelligent, a lovely and refined family companion, and Also serves as an excellent hunter. The independent nature and keen understanding make the Curl Retriever sometimes appear aloof or stubborn and, therefore, show less affection than other breeds, especially to strangers; the Curl Retriever's independence and self-confidence does not Not because of shyness or lack of joy. In the show field, a curly retriever with a suitable temperament will stand firmly in its position, easily obeying the test requirements. It is possible to wag its tail while the test is in progress. In the wild, the Curly Retriever's appetite for prey is eager, persistent, and inherently brave; in the home, it is quiet and affectionate. Shyness is a defect, and any breed removed from show field testing due to shyness does not meet the criteria. Small prize treats can be prepared when testing young dogs to prevent undesired behavior in the show field due to excessive activity or lack of necessary training and practice. |
FCI Criteria: 【General Appearance】This intelligent, robust, and versatile hunter is regarded by most research dog experts as one of the oldest hunting dog breeds. The development of this breed in England has long been favored by British gamekeepers. Its natural ability in the wild, courageous and persistent spirit, strong body and strong temperament give it the ability to work continuously to hunt beast and avian prey in hidden depths and in icy cold water. In order to be fit for a day of hunting, a curly retriever must be smooth and healthy, strong and agile. Shape, body structure and posture, together form a beautiful form different from other species. At the same time, it also provides the unique work ability that people yearn for. In appearance, the front and rear of the Curl Retriever form an appropriate angle. Compared to other breeds in terms of height and length, it gives the impression that its limbs are higher than other breeds. Physically, the Curly Retriever is an erect, alert, and confident dog. In terms of movement, all parts of the body will be organically combined with smoothness, strength, coordination and symmetry. Coat, as a breed characteristic, is especially important for all poodles, whether it is a companion dog, a hunting dog or a show dog. The perfect coat is characterized by dense fine, firm, clear, clean curls. The Curly Retriever is an intelligent, mischievous and extremely trainable breed. Because of this, this breed is widely loved as a loyal companion at home and as a hunting dog in the wild. 【Small person, proportion and structure】Height of the body——Based on the upper edge of the scapula, the ideal height: 63.5-68.6 cm for male dogs; 58.4-63.5 cm for female dogs. Heights outside this range are considered defects. The body tends to be square, which means that its length (from chest to rump) is slightly longer than its height (from upper withers to the ground). The Curly Retriever is strong and graceful. It is paramount for the Curl Retriever to fully build strength and stamina without sacrificing standard. Bones - Neither slender nor bulky, fully proportional in weight, height and balance. 【Head】Head - in the shape of a wedge longer than wide, easily distinguishable from other hunting dogs, its size is in harmony with the whole body, the length of the front face is equal to or close to the length of the back skull equal. When the face is viewed from the side, the plane of the face is parallel. The forehead is shallow and sloping, where the width of the front eyelid is slightly narrower than the width of the back skull, but the junction between the two is smooth, the head is almost straight, and it gradually tapers to the end of the nose, with a sharp outline. Not rough. Expression - Smart and alert. Eyes - Almond shaped, large but not prominent. For black dogs, it is black or brown; for liver red dogs, it is brown or yellowish. Rough yellow eyes and flabby hazelnut eyes are not acceptable. Ears - Small, set slightly above the corners of the eyes and stretched close to the head. Posterior Skull - Flat or nearly flat. Foreface - The muzzle is wedge-shaped. The line is smooth, gradually tapering, neither sharp nor blunt, slightly rounded at its base. The muzzle is level, not skewed. MIND - Long and strong, with straight teeth in a proper scissors bite. The lips are tight and well-proportioned, not drooping. Nose - Pigmented, black nose in black dogs, brown nose in liver red dogs, large nostrils. [Neck, Dorsal Midline and Trunk] Neck - Strong, slightly arched, of medium length, with free movement at the front of the neck, gradually transitioning to moderately set back shoulders. Topline - The back is the portion of the torso from the posterior point of the shoulder blades to the beginning of the waist, strong and level. Loin - is the extension of the trunk from the end of the flanks to the beginning of the pelvis, short and muscular. Hip - is the part of the torso from the beginning of the pelvis to the base of the tail, with a slight slope. Torso - Deep chest. But not too wide, oval at the intersection, up to the elbow. The chest profile that meets the standard in this dog should be deep but not wide, but not narrow. Ribs are elastic, neither barrel-shaped nor slab-shaped, extending well back and having a certain depth. The waist is broad and full of strength, and its flanks are properly tucked. Tail - The tail is straight or nearly straight back, never clipped, and close to the hocks when lowered. Never bent to the back, not kinked, not curved, covered with curly hair. If the tail has been modified, the tail tapers towards the rear. [Forequarters] The shoulder blades are long and have suitable muscle attachments, forming a 55° angle back, with sufficient width between the two shoulder blades, and flexible bending to suit prey capture. The length of the upper arm bone is similar to The scapulae are approximately equal in length and form an approximately equal angle to the scapula. This means that the forelegs are below the shoulder blades. The equal length of the shoulder blades and upper arm bones and the balanced angle between the two allow for greater extension of the forelegs. The forelegs are straight and strong. The feet are inverted, compact, with well-arched toes and thick pads, and the dewclaws are usually removed from the forelegs. 【Hindquarters】Strong and angled for smooth forward movement. The thighs are full of strength, and the lower limbs are full of muscles. The knees are properly flexed, the tarsus is strong and fit, neither in nor out, and the tarsus is straight down. The dewclaws are removed from the hind legs. 【Coat】The coat of the Curly Retriever is one of its distinguishing characteristics and is quite different from any other breed. The body coat is thick and dense, with broad curls tightly covering the skin, elastic and resistant to water. The high density of the coat provides protection against harsh weather, water and other damaging elements. The curl extends straight forward to the entire neck and even to the occiput: down to the forelegs and hindlimbs and to the hock joint, and covers the entire tail. Elsewhere the coat is short, smooth and straight, mainly on the forehead, face, underside of forelegs and feet. A small curly hair or hairless patch on the back of the scapula, including a downward strip of hairless area on the back of the extremities or a triangular hairless patch on the front of the neck, will be shown in the game disadvantaged. Loose, not fully curly hair is permitted on both ears. Thin, soft or very coarse hair, and dry or brittle hair are all defects. Grooming - The coat on the ears, abdomen, back of forelimbs, thighs, ties, hocks and feet can be groomed. The tail coat should be removed. A short, neat coat on the ears is permitted. However, it is not acceptable for the trunk coat to be trimmed. 【Color】Black or liver red are standard. A prominent white spot is not acceptable, but a dog with a little white coat that is otherwise very good is allowed. 【Gait】The Curly Retriever can fulfill the dual functions as a water hunter and a land game hunter. In addition to the need for strength and stamina, it must also be quick and alert. A stride that can cover a large distance is a combination of structure and power, and this seemingly effortless step is actually extremely efficient and the result of coordination from start to finish. When viewed from the side, the dog moves freely, naturally and quickly. When viewed from the front or rear of the dog, the movement of the dog's front legs is neither in nor out, and the hind legs are not crossed. Well-developed, intramuscular thighs and strong hocks work in perfect harmony to promote rear thrust and drive power. It is important that the movements of the forequarters and hindquarters are strong and fluid, as the movement of the co-ordination does not damage the dog's body. Large angles and strides are not acceptable. |
